J’ai connu, Ben au Lycée Français Jean Mermoz, Ben montait sur scène dès que l’école organisait un évènement. Déjà adolescent il râpait et dansait dès que l’occasion s’y prêtait. Aujourd’hui à Miami, Ben est dans la musique et vient de sortir son premier opus The Gift. Dans ce cadre, j’interviewais Ben pour la plateforme culturelle Wakh’Art.
Qui es-tu? Comment te définis-tu?
« Je suis Ibrahima Ben Bass Sock dernier d’une famille de cinq enfants! J’ai grandi avec beaucoup de femmes autour de moi, Ma mère et mes trois sœurs. Je pense que l’importance des femmes dans ma vie, se ressent dans ma musique. Au-delà de çà, je suis quelqu’un de déterminé. J’essaye de rester humble et de garder l’équilibre entre le sérieux et le fun. J’ai fais des études de programmation informatique à MDC et en parallèle, je travaillais dans une compagnie d’informatique. »
Pourquoi le Rap et Depuis quand?
« Sans m’en rendre compte j’ai toujours voulu toucher à tout. Le milieu du travail, le milieu artistique, jusqu’à la cuisine, ce qui ma permit de faire des évènements privés en tant que chef ou sous chef!
Je suis tombé amoureux du hip hop très jeunes, en commencent par Snoop Dogg! Jai tout de suite su que c’était l’art dont je voulais vivre. En faisant des scènes à l’âge de 11 ans. J’étais en 6eme à l’école Jean Mermoz ca na fait que confirmer le rêve! A 13 ans, j’ai commencé à écrire sur des instrumentaux de mon frère et je n’ai jamais arrêté (d’écrire) malgré le temps que j’ai passé sans enregistrer entre 2008 et 2012 où j’ai repris sérieusement! »
Peux-tu me parler un peu de The gift? Et des différentes collaborations ?
« Mon style principal est plutôt pausé, mais j’ai la possibilité de m’adapter à tout les styles donc mon idée était de faire un mélange homogène de mes inspirations, et des tracks dans un pure style rap que j’écoute aujourd’hui. Ca a donné Keep it 100, Best Here, F arrogance, Come Over. The Gift compte Seulement deux collaborations: Delilah à la Voix « sexy », c’est une fille de Miami que vous allez bientôt découvrir! Et Aida qui est ma sœur, elle a une voix unique et elle a fait beaucoup de refrains sur mes sons depuis le début. Elle a aussi partagé la scène avec moi quand jetais en 5eme. »
Comment est perçu le rap galsen à Miami..
« Miami est une ville très métissé. Rare sont ceux qui connaissent le rap galsen! A travers moi certains là-bas ont pu écouter des artistes comme Awadi, Elzo ou Sanzala. Ils ont d’ailleurs beaucoup aimé malgré la barrière de la langue. Nous savons que rare sont les Américains qui écoutent la musique dans d’autres langues que l’anglais, mai ca pourrait changer un jour! »
Que dis tu aux gens qui te définissent comme un rappeur américain?
« Je suis conscient de l’accent plutôt Américain que j’ai en parlant anglais, ayant commencé à parler la langue tôt, en partie grâce à la musique. Et j’ai passé beaucoup de temps à Miami, c’est comme une deuxième maison. Donc je n’ai pas vraiment de réponses à donner à ceux qui me confondent avec un rappeur américain. Tous ici savent d’où je viens. Mais je pense être simplement perçu comme un artiste. Je représente surtout le Galsen à travers mes actions car je porte avec fierté les valeurs sénégalaises. »
Qui sont tes paires? Les gens qui t’inspirent au quotidien.
Pour l’Inspiration: Le message de Tupac et Lauryn Hill, ainsi que Damian Marley (respect à son Père aussi) et a sa manière de poser les vérités profondes avec élégance! Niveau business Ryan Leslie m’inspire beaucoup, il est très talentueux et polyvalent comme moi! Respect to Ryan’s work! Je lis en lui « I’m just doing me » et c’est entre autre la philosophie que j’ai adopté dans le musique! J’essaye de rester vrai avec moi même et de montrer le Bon, le mauvais et les efforts que je fais pour combattre mes défauts,
Si tu étais un morceau de musique? Lequel serais- tu?
« Si j’etais un Morceau de musique je serais « God is great » de moi même!

Ou te vois-tu dans 5 ans.
« Dans 5 ans s’il plait à Dieu, je me vois dans mon prochain studio avec une équipe talentueuse à mes cotes, marié et Père ou alors bientôt Père. Peut être en tant que « Producteur », qui sait? »
Que penses-tu du Game au Sénégal?
« Je suis très fier de l’évolution du Game au Sénégal. Je suis beaucoup d’artistes… Et tous ce qui est fait sans la participation de grande maison de disque ou autre me plait vraiment! Ca confirme que nous sommes très créatifs au Sénégal, avec les moyens du bord, on avance!
Le Game underground aujourd’hui est très proche du Game underground ici! L’afflux de boulot m’empêche pour l’instant de m’y rendre autant que je le souhaiterais. Mais comme on dit « Lou Djot Y
ombe ». Il ya beaucoup de talents au Sénégal, j’aimerais le montrer a ceux d’ici. »
Ton mots de la fin:?
« Il suffit de croire en quelques choses pour se concentrer et donner son maximum! Nous croyons de plus en plus. »

I knew, Ben at « Lycee Francais Jean Mermoz, Ben used to perform at school everytime they would have an event. At a young age he was already rappin and dancing when he had a chance to. Today, in Miami Ben is into music and just released his first project « The Gift ». Regarding that I will be interviewing him for the cultural Platform Wakh’Art.
who are you? How would you describe yourself?
I am Ibrahima Ben Bass Sock the youngest of a family of 5 children! I grew up around a strong presence of women around me like my mother and 3 sisters, and I think that it is felt in some of my music. Moreover, I am someone determined. I try to stay humble and keep a balance between being serious and fun. I studied computer Engineering and in parallel I used to work in software development.
Why Rap and since when?
Unaware of it at first I’ve always had interest in many things. On the professional field, artistic field, all the way to culinary, which also allowed me to work at events as a chef or sous chef.
I fell in love with hip hop very young, I started listening to Snoop Dogg back then! I knew right away that this was the art I wanted to live from. As I performed for the first time at 11. I was in (6eme) 6th grade in « Jean Mermoz » and it confirmed the dream! At 13 I started writing on my brother’s beats and I never really stopped (writing) despite of the time I spent without recording between 2008 and 2012 when I seriously got back into it!
Can you tell me a bit of the gift? and your collaborations?
My main style is mostly laid back but I am able to adapt to many different styles so my idea was to do a mix of my inspirations, with Rap tracks close to what hip hop sounds like today. We can hear that in Keep it 100, Best here, F arrogance, comeover… I only have two featurings on the gift: The sexy voice of Delilah, and my sister Aida’s unique voice, she did harmonies and hooks on my songs since the get go. She also shared the stage with me when I was in 7th Grade.
How is Rap in Galsen perceived in miami..
Miami is a very diverse city. It’s very rare here that they know of Rap in Galsen! Through me some people heard of artists like Awadi, Elzo or Sanzala. They actually loved it in spite of the language barrier! We know americans barely listen to music in other languages, but it could change one day!
What do you tell people that see you as an american rapper?
I am aware of the american accent I more or less have. I started speaking the language early somehow thanks to music. So I don’t really have an answer for them. I’ve also been in miami for a long time so it feels like a second home. Everyone here knows where I’m from. But I simply think that I am seen as an artist. I represent Galsen mostly throughout my actions because I proudly wear the values from Senegal.
Can you name a few artist who inspire you?
Tupac or Lauryn Hill’s message, also Damian Marley (Respect to his father as well) and his way smooth way of delivering deep truth. Business-wise, Ryan Leslie, he’s very talented multitask like I am! Respect to Ryan’s work. I see in him « I’m just doing me » and it’s more like the style I’ve been leaning towards! I’m trynna stay real with my self and show the good, the bad and the effort put in to get better and work on the weaknesses.
If you were a song, which one would you be?
If I were a song I’d be « God is Great » by me! (available on soundcloud) I have an EP that should drop before the end of the year with tracks of the same vibe!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, god willing, I see myself in my next studio with a talented team with me, married, father or soon to be. Maybe as a producer who knows?
What do you think of the game in Senegal?
I am very proud to see the game progress in Senegal. I check out a lot of artists… And everything done without the help of a big record label or else is dope! It shows how creative our minds are in Senegal, with what we got, we keep pushing!
The game underground there is very close to how the game underground is here! There is a lot of talent in Senegal, I wanna show them out here.
Your last words?
It takes believing in something to focus and give it all you’ve got! We Believe more and more.
